Free will versus determinism
Is anyone interested in discussing this topic? Even though it is an old debate, I don't believe there is nothing left to uncover. I hope there are people who would like to share their views.

Re: Free will versus determinism
I am very surprised that no one is interested in this topic, since it has been the most difficult but challenging subject in philosophy.

Re: Free will versus determinism
I would like to share a book on proof of determinism. It's online for free. Anyone interested?

Can we start by you telling us who forced you to start this thread?

Re: Free will versus determinism
Hi abaris, the truth of the matter is we don't have free will at all because every choice we make must be the choice that offers us the greatest satisfaction at each moment in time, rendering all other choices an impossibility. That doesn't mean we are always satisfied; it only means that among the options that are available to us, we must choose that which we believe is the better alternative under our particular circumstances. This has nothing to do with what other people feel is the best choice for us, but what we believe is best for us. Therefore, choice is an illusion because only one choice is ever possible.

Re: Free will versus determinism
This is the problem. I am not using the word 'determinism' as conventionally defined. We must begin the conversation with a definition that makes it feasible to choose between alternatives, and yet no have free will. I need to explain the definition I am using, which is not being forced by antecedent determinants that remove the agent and turn us into robots.

Re: Free will versus determinism
I think the debate of determinism v non-determinism is just another piece of binary thinking based on the misleading either/or hypothosis.
Just as wave/particle duality is a reality our reality could be both determined and non-determined.
